About Sunland Caravans
Background
Sunland Caravans was founded in 2003 by Roy Wyss, who became something of a legend in the Australian caravan industry. He was an innovator who was fearless in stepping outside the conventional way of building caravans.
Sunland became notable as an early adopter of composite construction and, most distinctively, the first (and still the only) manufacturer to use a full aluminium chassis. Wyss also acquired Phoenix Caravans around 10 years into Sunland’s history. Over two decades, the company evolved from timber-framed construction to sandwich panels and aluminium frames. Sunland won the Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s People’s Choice Manufacturer of the Year award in 2023.
Ownership & Structure
Roy Wyss announced his retirement and sold Sunland Caravans to Jamie Johnson (owner of Essential Caravans) and Jason Wylie (owner of Design RV and Lumberjack Campers). The sale was finalised around mid-September 2023. Roy and his wife Tess were expected to continue consulting to the new owners. The existing CEO Tarrot Wyss was retained, and staff jobs were secured. Sunland operates as a separate brand under the new ownership alongside Essential Caravans and Design RV. The factory is based in Caboolture, Queensland, though the new owners have connections to Melbourne-based manufacturing.
Manufacturing
Sunland builds at their facility in Caboolture, Queensland. Their standout construction feature is the full aluminium chassis, unique in the Australian market. Over the years, build processes evolved from timber frames to the current sandwich panel and aluminium frame construction. Sunland operates as a boutique manufacturer, producing relatively low volumes with a high degree of customisation. Customers can specify layouts, finishes, and equipment to their preferences. Roy Wyss was known for personally overseeing builds.
Market Position
Sunland occupies the premium off-road segment. Their caravans are engineered for serious outback touring with prices reflecting the boutique build approach and unique aluminium chassis technology. Models include the Phoenix, Longreach, Winton, and Patriot. The recent ownership change brings the brand into a group of companies that may offer broader market reach while maintaining Sunland’s premium positioning.
