About Trakka

Background

Trakka is one of Australia’s longest-surviving and most respected motorhome manufacturers, founded by Dave Berry in 1973. Berry’s interest in motorhoming was piqued early when he and his brother regularly used their father’s VW Kombi. Around the age of 15, his dad purchased a 1968/69 VW camper, sparking a lifelong passion. Berry became an apprentice cabinet maker and opened Trakka, specialising in converting the Volkswagen T2 Transporter.

Trakka has a unique motorsport heritage, having participated in the Australian Safari rally for several years. The inaugural race took place in 1985, and by 1990 Trakka’s VW camper won the Production Class. The early 1990s brought the Mercedes Sprinter to Australia, transforming the industry, and Trakka led the charge with the Fiat Ducato platform. Dave Berry passed away suddenly on 31 May 2019, but the business continues as a family-run operation.

Ownership & Structure

Trakka remains a family-owned and operated business. Following Dave Berry’s death in 2019, the company continues under family leadership. The business operates from purpose-built premises in Mt Kuring-gai (outer northern Sydney suburbs), where they moved from their original Neutral Bay location in the early 1990s. With over 53 years of continuous operation, Trakka is one of Australia’s oldest RV manufacturers.

Manufacturing

Trakka builds from their purpose-built facility in Mt Kuring-gai, Sydney. They are a second-stage manufacturer, converting commercial van platforms into motorhomes and campervans. Current platforms include Volkswagen (T7 Transporter), Fiat (Ducato), and Mercedes-Benz (Sprinter). The company integrates intelligent systems and premium materials into each build. Models include the Trakkadu (VW-based), Trakkaway (Fiat-based), Akuna (Mercedes-based), and Jabiru (Mercedes 4WD). Each vehicle is essentially hand-built to a high standard, limiting production volumes.

Market Position

Trakka sits firmly at the premium end of the Australian motorhome market. Pricing reflects the premium positioning and hand-built quality.
